My Mission
Hi, I'm Kate, founder of Apex Access Consulting. I'm also a person living with blindness caused by a degenerative eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP).
I was first diagnosed at age twelve, alongside another member of my family. For years, my experience was limited to night blindness and loss of peripheral vision. But after the birth of my first child, I lost the majority of my sight. Suddenly, I was learning how to navigate a world I could no longer see while caring for a newborn as a first-time mom. It was overwhelming and, at times, terrifying. But it also taught me resilience in ways I never imagined.
Before losing my vision, I worked in the healthcare field, where I developed a deep passion for advocating for people with disabilities. But everything changed when my son turned six and was also diagnosed with RP. In that moment, I understood the life he would face, the barriers, the stigma, and the ways people like us are often overlooked or misunderstood simply because our condition makes others uncomfortable.
That realization ignited something in me. My advocacy became more than a passion. It became a responsibility. I knew I had to challenge ignorance and replace it with knowledge, to help create a world where my son and others like him would not feel invisible, dismissed, or alone.
A professor once told me, "Even the smallest of hinges can swing big doors." That belief has stayed with me. Change does not always start big, but it must start somewhere.
That's why I created Apex Access Consulting, to turn barriers into bridges, connecting sighted and non-sighted communities through education, awareness, and meaningful access.
Accessibility is often overlooked or dismissed, not given any thought. My mission is to change that by providing the tools, knowledge, and perspective needed to ensure access for all.
I believe people are good at heart. Often, misconceptions comes from a lack of exposure or awareness. Through this work, I aim to break down stigma, challenge assumptions, and build a more inclusive world for all.
And to those in the blind and visually impaired community, you are not alone. Your diagnosis does not define you. Together, we can create change.
